Discouraged runners tend to drop out. After having given us the theological reasons to keep running, the writer now turns to the practical act of calling upon us to encourage each other in Hebrews 12:12-17.

Psalm 42 calls us to worship, where one who was discouraged and disheartened learned to look up and out at God. We can be encouraged that our Great High Priest has our name graven on his hands and written on His heart, so we sing of that in “Before the Throne of God”.

The writer of Hebrews quotes Isaiah 35 in Hebrews 12:12, so we read this Scripture as our Old Testament reading.

We then have the joy of a child dedication.

Galatians 5:22-6:10 records the way believers may exhort each other. After prayer, we offer God both our sacrifices of labour and of praise, with the consoling hymn “Jesus, Lover of My Soul”.

After meditating together on Hebrews 12, we depart with a sung and spoken benediction.

Running a long race can be discouraging. Today’s text in Hebrews 12:5-11 encourages us to consider that the pain of training is parental in nature, and deliberate in design.

We begin with Psalm 107, in which we see God’s deliberate ordering of circumstances to cause men to “cry out” to the Lord is humble faith. We agree with the psalmist  that “men should give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!” We then sing of this goodness in the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul”.
Our Old Testament reading is Psalm 73, where Asaph compared his life to that of the unbeliever and thought it unfair – until he understood that God’s designs for His children are very different than those for the unsaved. Those who are in Christ can sing “How Firm a Foundation” of the promises of God, since God designs “our dross to consume, and our gold to refine” in the fire of trials. Though “God Moves In a Mysterious Way”, we can trust His designs. Our second reading describes how Paul found out the Fatherly purpose of his trial, in 2 Corinthians 12:1-10.
After petitionary prayer, we present our offering, and sing our hymn of the month “My Song is Love Unknown”. We then study Hebrews 12:5-11, and close with “What God Ordains Is Always Good.”

Hebrews 12:1-4 are justly celebrated as magnificent verses encouraging endurance, by fixing our eyes upon Jesus, the Finisher of the Faith. We do that this morning in corporate worship. We are called to worship by Psalm 47. We then exalt our King by singing of His perfections as Final Prophet, Priest, and King, in “Lord, Enthroned in Heavenly Splendour”.

Our reading from the Tanakh is a Messianic prophecy that Messiah would “set His face as a flint” and persevere to the end. We can run with endurance, because He did. We follow this up with a folk hymn that anticipates finishing the race, because our hope is that “To Be With Christ” is better far. We add a doxology to this with “Glory Be to the Father”.

Our New Testament reading contains the promise that overcomers, those who finish, will inherit the glories and joys of the New Jerusalem. For the joy set before us, we endure. We then pray as a church family, before offering our gifts, while singing our hymn of the month, “My Song is Love Unknown”. We then study Hebrews 12:1-4, and finish with the hymn “May the Mind of Christ My Saviour”. We depart with God’s blessing.

To walk by faith is to lovingly draw near to God for the hope of His excellent glory. Hebrews 11:8-22, our sermon text, illustrates what faith looks like.

We are called by God to worship Him through a reading of Psalm 100. We then unite our voices in the triumphant hymn, “Come Christians Join to Sing”.

Our Old Testament reading gives us the dramatic account of Abraham offering up Isaac in obedient faith. We then sing praise to Abraham’s God in “The God of Abraham Praise”. We follow this with a paraphrase of Psalm 23, “Good Shepherd of My Soul” where David teaches us that the life of a believer is one of a sheep following the Lord in trusting faith.

Our New Testament reading in 2 Corinthians teaches us the difference between walking by faith and walking by sight. We then lift our hearts in faith and pray a petitionary prayer together. Our faith responds to God in giving, while we prepare our hearts with “Speak, O Lord”. We put out the welcome mat for God’s Word, before closing with the doxology and benediction.
